Limb salvage through ring fixateurs

Situation:

Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine the number of severely injured people is increasing. To treat their extensive and very often infected skin-muscle-nerves-joint -and bone defects needs a lot of experience in specialized traumacenters. One proven method for bone stabilization in such cases is the so-called ring fixateur which allows a nearly unobstructed access to the soft tissue as well. However, Ukraine has a manifest shortage in both, ring fixateurs and basic instruments.

Health care in Kharkiv Oblast

Situation:

There is only one pharmacy and one hospital left in the city of Kupjansk. However, for people from the surrounding villages, these are inaccessible as public transport has been destroyed. Elderly people and those in need of care are particularly affected and have been unable to access medical care since the start of the invasion.

Objectives:

Improvement of medical care for the population of the city of Kupjansk and the surrounding villages through primary care, regular check-ups and specialist medical advice.

Improving hypertension control and stroke care in Madagascar by strengthening the health system along the care cascade

Situation:

Madagascar has a population of 31 million inhabitants with a life expectancy at birth of 65 years. Stroke is the leading cause of hospital mortality and disability, with an estimated prevalence of hypertension at 36% as the most important risk factor. With only 20 neurologists and 5 neurosurgeons in the country, the high burden of stroke is alarming.

Objectives:

Reduce the burden of stroke in Southern Madagascar (Anosy, Atsimo-Andrefana) through prevention, treatment and rehabilitation

Pathways to healthcare for patients with chronic respiratory diseases

Situation:

Chronic respiratory diseases, specifically airways diseases, are the third leading cause of death worldwide. Low- and middle-income countries are particularly affected and have higher mortality than high-income countries. Although local guidelines exist, implementation is a major challenge. Apart from funding constraints, limited awareness of CRDs and health care capacity are the main reasons.

Objectives:

Strengthening the rehabilitation of adults and children with disabilities

Situation:

Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in Asia, with growing inequalities between urban and rural areas. The majority of persons with disabilities and their families are trapped in a cycle of poverty and marginalization. Disability increases with age and is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The percentage of the population living with disabilities is among the highest in the world.
