Situation: 

Only 10% of healthcare facilities in Tanzania provide palliative care. With rising cancer cases, most patients present at advanced stages where symptom management is crucial. Effective symptom control is also vital for poorly managed non-communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS but remains largely inaccessible across the country.

Situation: 

Before the Russian invasion in 2022, Ukraine already had a high mental health burden. Mental disorders were the second leading cause of disability, affecting 30% of the population. The war has exacerbated this issue: Estimates suggest that 15 million people require psychological assistance, while the existing healthcare system is overwhelmed.

Healthcare support to internally displaced people in Vinnytsia oblast, Ukraine

Situation: 

The war in Ukraine is ongoing for the third year, causing, among other, massive migration of the population from the areas close to the frontline, to relatively safer regions in central and western parts of the country. The influx of the displaced people causes overloading of the public services, one of which is healthcare, which is currently overstretched and cannot cover all the needs. 
 

Improving the chances of survival for children with cancer in Malawi

Situation:

In high-income countries such as Germany, over 80% of children who develop cancer survive. In Malawi, one of the world’s most resource-poor countries, survival rates are under 25%. This is due to factors including: a limited knowledge amongst medical staff about cancer diagnosis and treatment; under-resourced paediatric oncology services; and families being unable to afford treatment costs.
 

Leprosy Case Detection and Assessing Stigma & Mental Health in Potential hotspot areas in Ethiopia (LeAP-Ethiopia)

Situation:

Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, contributed to 28,800 DALYs globally in 2019. Ethiopia ranks 6th worldwide and 2nd in Africa for new cases, with the 3rd highest number of child cases globally. Despite its biopsychosocial impacts and economic toll, leprosy remains neglected in health policies and research, hindering efforts to meet the global elimination target by 2030.

Screening and early intervention for children with deafblindness

Situation:  

In Kenya, infants are rarely screened for sight or hearing loss at birth. Without early diagnosis, quality health care and early-years support, children with deafblindness and other complex disabilities risk development delays. They then need more significant support later in childhood, by which time they and their families have faced years of challenges and exclusion.
