Limb salvage through ring fixateurs

Ring fixateurs in the OR
(© Prof. Dr. Wolf Mutschler)
Situation:
Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine the number of severely injured people is increasing. To treat their extensive and very often infected skin-muscle-nerves-joint -and bone defects needs a lot of experience in specialized traumacenters. One proven method for bone stabilization in such cases is the so-called ring fixateur which allows a nearly unobstructed access to the soft tissue as well. However, Ukraine has a manifest shortage in both, ring fixateurs and basic instruments.
Objectives:
“To fill a big gap by a small project in the light of a limited budget “ = to deliver implants and instruments to one hospital in Ukraine and do an on-site staff training by german surgeons
Indicators:
- Delivery of all material and proven skills training
- Number of operations performed
- Follow up of patients operated on
Measures:
- Concrete assistance of german surgeons on site during 12 days per mission
- Workshops, case presentations, morning rounds and training operations in 2 hospitals in Vinnitsya
- Case documentation
Sustainability:
- Delivery of a high-end product and basic instruments like an universal drill machine and a bone saw to be used in a high number of patients during the next months
- Training in quality management (standardized documentation, follow up agreement , embedded rehabilitation algorithm)
Special features:
- Experienced German surgeons work in time of war on-site, will be continued
- Demonstration of advanced techniques for bone and soft tissue reconstruction on-site
- Guest visits of Ukrainian surgeons and anesthesists in Munich, University Hospital LMU, already established
