In its eight application procedures - first and second applications, key projects, Else Kröner-Memorial-Stipendien (Scholarship), Else Kröner-Exzellenzstipendien (Scholarship), Else Kröner Clinician Scientist Professuren (Scholarship), Else Kröner-Promotionskollegien (Doctoral Promotion Groups) for Medical Students, Else Kröner-Forschungskollegien (Research Groups) for Physicians and Else Kröner Medical Scientist Kolleg for Natural Scientists  - the EKFS foundation funds medical doctors who want to combine research and clinical work within their career path (Clinician Scientists), up-and-coming young scientists working in the medical field, and researchers who want to carry out key projects that raise expectations of breakthroughs in the diagnosis and therapy of diseases.

Within the “Translatorik” funding line for translational research, application-oriented research projects are funded which are supposed to help towards closing gaps between basic medical/natural sciences research and its application in everyday clinical work as quickly as possible.
