Else Kröner Fresenius Award for Development Cooperation in Medicine 2022

The award acknowledges outstanding projects which contribute toward improving medical healthcare in developing countries along with those persons from organizations who are responsible for the projects. The award is endowed with 100,000 euros. This year the award honors projects on the topic of “Sustainable Surgical Healthcare.” 

On a worldwide scale, an estimated 30 percent of all illnesses must be treated surgically. Roughly five billion people, primarily in resource-poor countries, have no access to primary surgical healthcare. 
 

Treatment of HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases in Malawi

Situation:

About 8.9 percent of adults in Malawi are HIV positive, especially women and young people. Blantyre and its rural surroundings are among the areas with the highest prevalence of HIV in Malawi, with an HIV prevalence of 13.2 percent. 21 percent of people living with HIV are not receiving life-saving AIDS treatment (ART). ART and other assistance led to fewer new HIV infections and mortality.
 

Therapien und Ultraschall für die Jüngsten

Bad Homburg v.d. Höhe, 15. Februar 2022 – Pro Jahr sterben mehr als fünf Millionen Kinder vor ihrem fünften Geburtstag und noch einmal rund eine Million bis zum Alter von 14 Jahren – meist an eigentlich vermeidbaren oder heilbaren Krankheiten. Die Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) hat eine Sonderausschreibung zur Verbesserung der Kindergesundheit in Entwicklungsländern ins Leben gerufen und wird zwei Projekte für mindestens fünf Jahre mit insgesamt drei Millionen Euro fördern.

CENtre de SAnté MATernelle et Infantile de Lambaréné (CENSAMATIL)

Situation:

Forming a multidisciplinary team consisting of local experts and individuals of the community will contribute to obtaining valuable information on how to improve maternal and child health and,  addtionally, implementation of the results obtained from the different studies will be possible.
Within this program, training programs are being developed in order to improve dietary and hygiene habits and to improve maternal and child health.

Support of Irene Salimi Children Hospital at Kabul / Afghanistan

Situation:

Due to drought and bad harvest the Afghan population is facing starvation and hunger as the UN organizations stated. Even at the capital Kabul a huge number of people lost their jobs through the leave of US and allies. Civil servants haven’t received their salaries in months. The economic situation is precarious and hardly any family can survive without help from outside, be it relatives or international aid. The change of government and the slow restructuring of society are putting additional strain on the situation.

Afghanistan: Millionen Menschen werden an Unterernährung leiden

Die Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) unterstützt derzeit zwei Förderprojekte in Afghanistan. Das Projekt von World Vision ist im westlichen afghanischen Hinterland angesiedelt. Ziel ist es, die Anzahl an qualifizierten Hebammen im Land zu erhöhen. Mit einer zweijährigen Ausbildung und zusätzlichen Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten sollen weibliche Fachkräfte im Gesundheitssektor gestärkt werden.
