Situation:

Tanzania is still among the countries with the highest number of newborn deaths (21/1000 live births) in sub-Sahara African. Meanwhile, more than 2 million babies are born every year. It is the goal of the Tanzanian Government to improve maternal and child health and to establish countrywide newborn care units in the district and regional hospitals.

Objectives:

Implementation of the first national Master programme in neonatology (“MSc Neonatology”) at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam.

Situation:

The lack of health workers contributes to the high child mortality rate in Malawi. However, the training of paediatricians is complex and expensive, so that there are few opportunities for trainees in the field of paediatrics. At the same time, prospective paediatricians in Germany are interested in completing further training in an African country.
 

Objectives:

The project ensures the training of Malawian paediatricians. A training period at a Malawian paediatric teaching hospital supplements the training of German paediatricians.

Situation:

The south-eastern region of Malawi has a rapidly growing urban population, in particular rural. Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) is one out of four tertiary referral centres in Malawi. Fulfilling this role, it caters for approximately 4.3 Million in the south-eastern region of Malawi. At the same time, it functions as the only hospital for Zomba City and Zomba District.  As well as the hospital, the department for rehabilitation plays a key role in the medical care for this community.

Situation:

Ethiopia has one of the world’s highest rates of blindness and low vision. Uncorrected Refractive Error (URE) is the leading cause of visual impairment after cataract in Ethiopia. There is currently no national programme for screening children and eye health services remain limited to urban areas. URE is causing many children to become unnecessarily visually impaired across Ethiopia.

Situation:

The past decades in Iraq and Syria have been marked by dictatorship, war, terror and displacement. In addition to the ongoing civil war in Syria, the terror of the so-called "Islamic State" (IS) in particular has driven millions of people to flee their homes between 2014 and 2018. The increased need for psychological support meets a precarious shortage of specialists in these health professions.
