The focus of this year’s presentation of the Else Kröner Fresenius Award for Development Cooperation in Medicine on the 28th of October lies on the topic “Epidemic Preparedness and Response” – the combating of numerous well-known infectious diseases that can cause epidemics – for example acute meningitis, the plague, polio, malaria or Ebola.
Award-winner Dr. Jean-Paul Uvoyo Ulangi, Country Medical Coordinator DR Congo and Regional Health Advisor, Malteser International, reports in an interview on the award-winning project “Community communication as key for preparedness, prevention and response ─ A comprehensive approach toward epidemics in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo”.

On October 26, 2021, Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) is represented at the World Health Summit with the topic “Epidemic preparedness beyond Covid-19 – What can be learned from countries with limited resources?”
Within the framework of the funding program “Hospital Partnerships – Partners Strengthen Health”, together with the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is supporting partnership projects between German organizations in the health sector and partners in medium- and low-income countries.
Kyrgyzstan is a low-income country with a population of 6.3 million people. About 400,000 of them are elderly people of whom 4% need institutional full-time care, and over 12 percent need home-based integrated care. Over 180.000 persons with disabilities live in Kyrgyzstan, out of which a significant number of adults and children are in need of home-based social and medical services as well.

Topic: Epidemic preparedness beyond Covid-19 – What can be learned from countries with limited resources?
The workshop will discuss several successful partnership-based projects from OECD DAC-listed countries that demonstrate how epidemic outbreaks can be detected and prevented at an early stage. The participants will explore the question of what countries like Germany in the Global North can learn from successful epidemic preparedness and response projects in the Global South.
Due to poverty, many children in the rural areas of Rwanda do not have health insurance and no diagnosis of their medical condition. In addition, there is a lack of support such as wheelchairs or therapy options.
The project contributes to directly improving the health situation and well-being of the particularly disadvantaged group of children and adolescents with disabilities in the rural regions of Rwanda, thus reducing inequalities.
