Checking back: What has become of our formerly funded scientists?

Prof. Dr. Stefanie Kürten has been Professor for Neuroanatomy at the Institute of Anatomy within University Hospital Bonn since 2020. The emphasis of her research lies on multiple sclerosis (MS), a neurological disease that more than 250,000 people suffer from in Germany. The rapid transfer of research findings to clinical application is especially important to her in the course of her work. She also sets new accents during the training to become a physician and wants to develop the Bonn location into a center for clinical anatomy. 

Frankfurt sets its sights on kidneys

At the University Hospital of Frankfurt, that’s why nephrology is now going to receive a massive boost. In the course of the new appointment of Prof. Thimoteus Speer, the specialized field will be upgraded to become a clinic of its own at the University Hospital. In addition, a Center for Nephrological Research is arising together with the foundation Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung.

Translational pancreas surgery

The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is usually poor. Successful surgical therapy is only possible in an early tumor stage in the absence of distant metastases. A leading reason for this poor prognosis is the extremely frequent growth of tumor cells into the surrounding nerves (so-called "neural invasion"). Prof. Dr. Demir developed new techniques to investigate this clinical problem and recently also used new experimental models to study this phenomenon (Wang et al. J Clin Invest 2023).

Artificial intelligence approaches to establish personalized and targeted Therapies for leukemias and lymphomas.

Our aim is to bring biology-based individualized treatment of lymphoma and leukemia into clinical practice. To achieve this ambitious aim, we establish a systems medicine program that integrates systematic functional assays, multi-omic profiling, bioinformatic analysis, mathematical modeling and setup towards a clinical exploitation. The basis of the program is a platform to map patient specific pathway activity and drug sensitivity of their primary tumor cells ex-vivo. Oral health of centenarians- clinical and sociological cross-sectional examination of oral health, oral health-related quality of life, masticatory function and nutrition

The number of very old people is increasing rapidly. In the field of oral health, however, there is little knowledge about the diseases, conditions and needs of very old people. To do this, we plan to study a group of centenarians, their offspring, and a control group. In addition to the dental examination, in which widespread diseases such as caries and periodontitis are examined, we will also focus on existing general diseases, chewing and nutritional factors, familial and environmental factors and oral health-related quality of life.

The functional role of nephrocytes in the immune response of Drosophila melanogaster

Chronic kidney diseases are among the deadliest diseases worldwide. The immune system is often responsible for tissue damage and signalling pathways associated with the immune system are upregulated in chronic kidney disease. Within this study, we will investigate whether podocytes, important cells of the kidney filter, serve as specialized immune cells and whether they modulate the immune system during disease. In detail, the model organism Drosophila will be used, as the immune system and the kidney cells are highly conserved between flies and humans.

Gender-specific mechanisms of inflammation and cardiac dysfunction in doxorubicin-induced heart failure and the role of AMPK

In tumor patients, chemotherapy is often the most important or only therapeutic option. The prognosis of patients depends not only on the response, but also on the side effects of this therapy. Cardiotoxicity, i.e. damage to the heart caused by chemotherapy, is an important side effect. The exact mechanisms of this damage are not yet well understood. In the present project, these effects are investigated using an animal model (mice) in order to improve understanding the cardiotoxicity described and consequently to support the development of preventive and therapeutic measures.

Glucagon-like peptide 2 ist ein Darmhormon und wird während der Nahrungsaufnahme freigesetzt. Es fördert am Dünndarm Wachstum und Barrierefunktion, an der Gallenblase die Wiederauffüllung. Vermutlich bereitet GLP-2 über diese Mechanismen den nachfolgenden Verdauungsprozess vor.
