People affected by leprosy and their families are stigmatized and marginalized. The fear of infection, prejudice and exclusion is great. Therefore, those affected often overlook or ignore the first signs. However, leprosy can be treated very well in the early stages and usually heals without consequences. If leprosy remains untreated, nerves are destroyed and irreversible damage often occurs to hands, feet and eyes.
A successful cooperation has evolved between Ukraine relief projects funded by EKFS and conducted by action medeor, a German medical aid organization, and Universitätsmedizin Essen, a foundation for medical aid under the auspices of Essen University Hospital in Germany. In the course of a press release in April EKFS had communicated its financial support for action medeor toward procuring mobile X-ray machines along with support for Universitätsmedizin Essen toward treating children suffering from cancer and for medical relief transports.
Within the framework of the funding program “Hospital Partnerships – Partners Strengthen Health”, together with the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is supporting partnership projects between German organizations in the health sector and partners in medium- and low-income countries.

Bad Homburg v.d.H., 07. April 2022 – Angesichts des großen Elends und der Probleme der Menschen im Kriegsgebiet der Ukraine, aber auch der nach Deutschland geflüchteten Ukrainerinnen und Ukrainer stellt die Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) ein Förderbudget von zunächst einer Million Euro für Projekte in der Ukraine oder in Deutschland zur Verfügung. Entsprechend dem Stiftungszweck wird das Geld ausschließlich für medizinische Projekte eingesetzt werden.
Compared to the conflict-affected East of the country, the South West has received little attention from the international community, and yet the health needs of the population are great. International assistance is largely focused on the prevention and management of infectious diseases, however, the burden of disease requiring surgical intervention-such as trauma, cancer, infection,and complications from childbirth-is substantial and growing. Surgery is an integral component of any properly functioning healthcare system.
