Within the scope of his funded project Adrian Gottschlich is developing targeted new immunotherapies for (young) patients with Hodgkin’s lymphomas (cancer of the lymph nodes) by means of computer-aided bioinformatic analyses. These new and specific therapeutic options are intended to contribute toward alleviating long-term side effects associated with chemotherapy and improving the survival rate for these patients.

Analysis of the effect of a polytrauma on murine fracture healing in the long term follow up

Polytrauma is the leading cause of death under the age of 50 and 60% of survivors suffer from relevant disabilities, such as delayed or non-healing of fractures, years after polytrauma. The reasons for this have not been adequately researched, but it is known that there is a direct connection between polytrauma and fracture healing, since the same cytokines are released in the inflammatory reaction after polytrauma as in the fracture healing process. However, there are no studies that examine fracture healing after polytrauma in a standardized manner over time.

Friend or foe? Investigating the role of fractalkine signaling and its therapeutic potential in FSGS

Insults to podocytes, specialized cells of the kidney filter unit, may lead to focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), representing one of the most common causes of end stage kidney disease. A central role of immune cells, driving local inflammation and scaring, is suspected irrespective of the initial assault. As current treatment is limited to broad immunosuppressant, more targeted approaches are warranted. This project aims to investigate fractalkine, a molecule central in immune cell attraction into the kidney, its function during FSGS and its potential as a therapeutic target.

EValuate: characterization of extracellular vesicles as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.

Cells release small membranous vesicles into the body to communicate with their surroundings. Cancer cells use these extracellular vesicles (EVs) to prepare the colonization of distant tissues. Early detection of cancer metastasis is still a major clinical challenge. However, using EVs as cancer markers fails due to a lack of knowledge about EV-mediated cell communication.
