Accelerating the Development and Practical Application of Anti-Infective Antibodies

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have revolutionized the treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancer in the last two decades. Lately, an increasing number of mAbs are also being developed which are directly targeted against viruses and bacteria. These anti-infective mAbs have unique attributes that make them promising agents for novel treatment and prevention strategies against a broad spectrum of viruses and bacteria. However, physicians often lack experience with this new class of drugs, which hampers a broader clinical application.

What works best and for whom? – Optimization of exposure treatment and predictors for treatment response

Exposure-based psychotherapy is the first-line treatment for anxiety disorders with medium to high effect sizes on average. Nonetheless, 30-50% of treated patients experience poor symptom reduction or relapses. Consequently, our research strives to optimize exposure therapy. Specifically, using an innovative Bayesian adaptive study design, we aim to address the underlying mechanism of exposure treatments, test superiority of small-scale interventions (e.g., positive affect), and investigate clinical and neurobiological predictors of treatment response.

Organotypic slice cultures of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma – a preclinical multi-OMICS approach for development of personalized treatment strategies

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In most patients, the tumor cannot be removed by surgery. Therefore, drug treatment options play a major role. The biology of each individual tumor is very different, so personalized therapies are becoming increasingly important. This project aims to establish a model in which the tumor is cultivated as an intact tissue section and used for individual treatment response testing.

Eines liegt darin, dass die Anforderungen der klinischen Arbeit zu Beginn der beruflichen Karriere keine zusammenhängende Forschungszeit für die Konzentration auf ein wissenschaftliches Forschungsvorhaben erlauben.

Ten-year longitudinal investigation of DNA methylation in patients with Parkinson’s disease from the DeNoPa cohort

Parkinson's disease exhibits a variable course and various symptoms. Genetic changes have been identified in approximately 10% of cases, while the causes of the remaining cases remain unclear. In addition to genetic information, DNA methylation also influences information transmission within cells. This methylation is to be investigated in the De Novo Parkinson (DeNoPa) cohort over a period of ten years. The objective is to create and compare methylation profiles to identify differences and analyze changes in the course.

Bridge-building between clinic and research

Bad Homburg v.d. Höhe, December 6, 2023 – Optimal compatibility of patient care and research: The foundation Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) is awarding three Else Kröner Clinician Scientist Professorships. This is the fifth time in a row. Each of the professorships is endowed with 1.1 million euros over a maximum of ten years – provided that a positive interim evaluation occurs after five years. One application per faculty was admissible.

The multifaceted agenda focused on two main themes: “Diseases of Worldwide Significance” and “Technological Breakthroughs in Life Sciences”. A wide-ranging spectrum of topics was offered – from infectious diseases to cardiology and neuro-oncology, all the way to developments in visual prosthesis, artificial photosynthesis and the improvement of crop yields via modifications in gene regulation.
