Around 18 million people in Malawi are currently treated for neurosurgical conditions by three neurosurgeons. Neurosurgery is a small but essential area of expertise because it makes a significant contribution to emergency care (traumatic brain injury, strokes), cancer therapy (brain tumors, metastases), and pediatric medicine (disorders of the brain water circulation). So far, people in Malawi have received insufficient neurosurgical care.
The St Francis Referral Hospital is a referral Hospital for a population of about 1 million people living in the rural south-west of Tanzania. By our project, we build up an emergency department with a patient’s triage and a three-shift 24-hour operating system. Besides emergency service for about 36,000 patients per year, regular bed-side teaching and courses in emergency medicine, ultrasound, and echocardiography are done, in order to train the trainers: A total of eight trained clinicians train other medical personnel in emergency medicine and point of care ultrasound.

Antimicrobial resistance is on the rise globally, leading to increasing numbers of virtually untreatable infections with devastating consequences for the affected patients. Together with Kiruddu Referral Hospital we aim to develop and implement an Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ABS), which combines systematic, sustainable efforts to secure the rational use of anti-infective treatments.
Our project addresses the health sub-sector of the rehabilitative services of people with disabilities in Vietnam. Rehabilitation and orthopaedic services, which are urgently needed, are often not provided adequately in health care facilities in Vietnam. This applies particularly to prosthetic & orthotic and assistive devices (POAD) services. In our project we are systematically strengthening these services in the province of Thừa Thiên-Huế in the Huế Rehabilitation Hospital. The objective is to establish a holistic treatment system around these POAD services.
One of the major issues of Sierra Leone continues to be extreme poverty. Economic decline, corruption and eleven years of civil war had dramatic consequences not only on the economy but also on society, above all children and youth. Young boys and girls suffer the most from poverty. Most of them are victims of physical, psychological and sexual violence and abuse. They suffer from depression, they are angry and afraid.
In northern Mozambique, pregnancy and childbirth are a serious health risk. The health system remains too weak to ensure adequate care for pregnant women, mothers and newborn babies.
