The project supports the outpatient and inpatient care of infants with severe acute malnutrition in 15 health centres and six health stations in the region of Tillaberi in northern Niger.

IRC supports health staff through training and provides medical equipment and relief supplies. Two mobile clinics provide patient care where lack of health centres, long transport routes or insufficient financial means of families make it difficult to provide timely treatment of severe cases.

Podoconiose is a neglected tropical disease, which leads to lymph edema, inflammations and reduced mobility and affects 1.6 Mio Ethiopians. Hygiene, socks and shoes are the key to treatment. 

Characteristics of the approach:

1.    Community based self-help groups with 6 monthly meetings; service providers travel
2.    Dialogue on the disease establishes trust
3.    People learn about their health, to prevent service dependency

Background
The stateless ethnic minorities in the remote mountains of Chiang Rai Province (Thailand) live in absolute poverty. Their health situation is as desperate as their human rights. Girls get pregnant at the age of 14. Grandparents look after the children while parents search means of survival. In this destitution child-trafficking is flourishing.
