Localization and regulation of endogenous β2-adrenergic receptors

The β2-adrenergic receptor is the pharmacological target for clinically important bronchodilators and tocolytics. It is also the prototype model receptor. Although studies on the β2-adrenergic receptor have provided essential insights into the regulation of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), they remain limited to in vitro cell systems. Our newly generated in vivo tag model offers the possibility to localize the receptor despite low expression in different tissues and to characterize the regulation in native tissues for the first time.

Importance of Novel Biomarkers in the Pathophysiology of Type 2 Diabetes and Coronary Heart Disease and Improvement of Risk Prediction Models

Our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has increased considerably in recent years. However, not all risk factors have been identified. Through our analyses of 47 different laboratory parameters (biomarkers) obtained from plasma and serum from a total of 19 metabolic pathways, we expect new insights into the relevance of different mechanisms in the development of T2DM and CHD.

Resection of initially non-resectable brain tumors after detection of functional reorganization of the motor cortex with navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation

In recent years, the understanding of dynamic cortico-subcortical functional networks has led to a paradigm shift in neuroscientific research. The idea of plastic networks also implied that functions could "move" due to a pathology. The project will analyze the incidence of such reorganizations and the dynamics of glioma-induced functional reorganization. The detection and understanding of functional reorganization opens up further possibilities in surgical resection.

Deciphering the oncogenic epitranscriptome in acute lymphoblastic T-cell leukemia using functional genetics

Acute T-cell leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive form of blood cancer with a poor prognosis in adults. Our research group is interested in the cellular signaling pathways that fuel the uncontrolled growth of the leukemic cells. Our work indicates that mRNA binding proteins and the "epitranscriptome", i.e. chemical modifications of RNA, play an important role in this context. For example, RNA binding proteins regulate the stability of mRNAs that encode oncogenes such as the MYC gene.

The role of cardiac CITED4 in age-dependent myocardial remodeling

The risk of cardiovascular disease steadily increases with increasing life expectancy. Heart failure is particularly common in the aged population and is a significant burden for the individual patient with a decrease in quality of life and a high mortality. The preventive and therapeutic effects of endurance exercise for cardiovascular diseases and heart failure specifically was previously shown. On a molecular level, however, more research is needed to understand the physiological and pathological mechanisms responsible.
