Im Rahmen einer Herzmuskelschwäche können häufig Arrhythmien (z. B. Vorhofflimmern) sowie eine kontraktile Fehlfunktion der Herzvorhöfe beobachtet werden. Basis dieser Veränderungen sind Umbauprozesse („atriales remodeling“), die mit einer vermehrten Fibrose und weiteren zellulären Veränderungen einhergehen. 

Unraveling polarity signaling at the kidney filtration barrier

Podozyten sind hoch spezialisierte Zellen der Niere, welche eine wichtige Rolle bei der Filtration in der Niere spielen. Sie weisen eine einzigartige Zellmorphologie auf, denn sie bilden Fußfortsätze, welche die kleinen Blutgefäße im Glomerulus der Niere komplett umwickeln. Kommt es zu einem Podozytenschaden, so werden diese Fußfortsätze abgeflacht und verschwinden schließlich gänzlich. Dadurch verbleiben die kleinen Blutgefäße des Glomerulus unbedeckt und die Filtration der Niere ist massiv beeinträchtigt.

Dissecting the Clonality and Exhaustion Phenotype of Tumor-specific T Cells in Glioblastoma

Malignant brain tumors, such as the glioblastoma, are characterized by their therapeutic resistance and invasive growth. The deep infiltration of tumor cells into the surrounding brain tissue makes a complete resection impossible. In order to cure this type of cancer, it is necessary to track, identify and eliminate individual tumor cells. The immune system potentially can meet these needs. However, glioblastoma has evolved multiple mechanisms to suppress the tumor-specific immune response. Our goal is to better understand the tumor-directed immune response.

Under the scope of this overarching topic the scientific priority areas of the Dresden medical campus oncological, metabolic and neurological / psychiatric disorders, can be summarized. Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is a severe stroke that affects relatively young people (mean age: 55 years). Delayed cerebral infarction is a unique complication of this disease and contributes heavily to its morbidity. Delayed infarcts are due to constriction of blood vessels wich is caused by blood break-down prodcuts. Effective therapies are lacking. 

Human bioactive peptide based intervention strategies to treat proteinuria

Proteinuria is a sign of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and a risk factor for kidney and cardiovascular outcomes. Podocytes are specialized epithelial cells of the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB). It is possible to directly address the podocytic actin cytoskeleton with a small molecule (Bis-T-23). This compound improves proteinuria and reverses glomerular damage in different models of podocyte injury, regardless of the original cause.

Evaluation of a body psychotherapy based group treatment program for dissociative seizures: a randomized controlled trial.

Dissociative (psychogenic non-epileptic) seizures are common. In epilepsy centers, up to 1/3 of all patients suffer from dissociative seizures. The seizures appear similar to epileptic seizures, but they have a different etiology, usually they are caused by psychological problems. Patients with dissociative seizures are often switching between neurology and psychosomatics because of unclear clinical responsibilities, which causes problems in the course of treatment.

Elucidation of the dynamic acetylation events during HIV infection

Im Rahmen des Projektes sollen virologische, biochemische und zellbiologische Techniken mit neuesten Methoden der Massenspektrometrie kombiniert werden, um bisher unbekannte Wechselwirkungen zwischen humanem Immundefizienzvirus (HIV) und Wirtszellen identifizieren zu können. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei insbesondere auf der Veränderung von Proteinen auf molekularer Ebene. Zusätzlich sollen gezielt neue Wirkstoffe ermittelt werden, die langfristig eine effektivere Behandlung von AIDS-Patienten ermöglichen.

Die alzheimersche Krankheit wird mit der Bildung von ß-Amyloidablagerungen assoziiert, die das Ergebnis einer Umsetzung des Amyloid Präkursor Proteins (APP) sind. APP unterliegt einer komplexen proteolytischen Umsetzung, die zu amyloido¬genen und Nicht-amyloidogenen Proteinen führt. Ein Protein auf dem non amyloidogenen Weg ist das Amyloid Präkursor Protein APPsα. 

COPCa – Coping with Prostate Cancer. Decision-making and coping strategies after the diagnosis “low-risk PCa”

The most common cancer in men is prostate cancer. More than half of the tumors are localized and have a good prognosis. The decision for a treatment option is, however, extremely complex, as the available therapies differ considerably in terms of physical side effects and psychological burden. While the physical side effects of the therapies are already well documented, it is less known how men make their decision for a therapy and how they live with this decision in the long-term.
