Else Kröner Fresenius Award for Development Cooperation in Medicine 2021
The award acknowledges outstanding projects which contribute toward improving medical healthcare in developing countries along with those persons from organizations who are responsible for the projects. The award is endowed with 100,000 euros. This year the award honors projects on the topic of “Epidemic Preparedness and Response.”

Improvement of therapy access and adherence for NCD-patients in slums
Situation:
Because of the dramatically increased poverty and unemployment more NCD-patients in slums need access to their therapies. Access and adherence to therapy should be improved at the Health Centre No. 16 by means of increasing medical personnel, more no-cost medicines, the development of training material and consultancy documents for laymen, the digitalization of medical files and drug dispensation.
Objectives:
Improvement of therapy access and adherence for NCD-patients in slums.
Welttag gegen vernachlässigte Tropenkrankheiten
Bad Homburg v.d. Höhe, 30. Januar 2021 – Um auf das Schicksal von mehr als 1,4 Milliarden Menschen in rund 150 Ländern* aufmerksam zu machen, findet am 30. Januar zum zweiten Mal der Welttag gegen vernachlässigte Tropenkrankheiten (Neglected Tropical Diseases – NTDs) statt. Die Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) fördert eine Reihe von Projekten, die sich der Bekämpfung der NTDs widmen.
Global Health and NTDs: an innovative educational approach to meet the endgame target in Madagascar -EduMad
Education at all levels of health care is crucial for the proper management of complex diseases, such as the parasitic neglected tropical disease (NTD) schistosomiasis. Madagascar is one of the countries with the highest prevalence. Gaps in higher education in both NTDs and Global Health have been identified. Moreover, technical gaps for the clinical management of schistosomiasis exist. EduMad will contribute to building NTD research and clinical capacities in Madagascar by training about 100 health professionals using an innovative educational approach.
Programme to improve child health
In order to promote a long-term programme to improve the health of children in developing countries (according to the OECD DAC country list), the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung is allocating funding of two million euros.
Every year 5.3 million children under the age of five die worldwide. Most of them in developing countries and because of diseases that are actually easy to prevent and treat.
