Sustainable support for the community hospital in St Louis du Nord

Situation:

Haiti ranks 170th out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index. Years of political, economic and social instability together with natural disasters such as the earthquake in 2010 or Hurricane Matthew in 2016, a high rate of inflation and a lack of production in the country itself contribute to a lack of infrastructure in health care system. Maternal mortality is with 521 per 100,000 live births extremely high. The northwest, including St. Louis du Nord is considered to be one of the most neglected regions in the country.

Situation:

Tanzania is a low-income country with a rapidly growing population of currently 58 million people. Situation:

Malteser International works in two out of totally nine camps along the Thai-Myanmar border. The number of refugees currently stands at almost 92,000, whereby almost 19,000 live in Mae Ra Ma Luang and Mae La Oon. The refugees originate in Myanmar, a country plagued by decades of civil war. Cease fire agreements are in place, but the peace process is slow and suffers from continued armed clashes in different parts of the country. The recent political coup in early 2021 threatens to revert all peace and trust building made over the past 10 years.

Situation:

The Ebola epidemic from 2014 until 2016 and the rural attrition of health workers have exacerbated the situation of mother-child health care. Only 65 midwives are available in the project area (popula-tion of approx. 900,000).

Nurses upgrading program

Situation:

Tanzania grows by about 1.5 million people every year and ranks among the 30 poorest countries in the world. There is a glaring shortage of medical personnel. Health care is provided primarily in rural areas by trained nurses. Despite this shortage, there are unemployed nurses because they cannot afford to pay for the final stage of the fee-based training. This last stage is necessary for them to be allowed to treat patients in hospital wards without medical supervision.
