The Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung presents the Else Kröner Fresenius Award for Development Cooperation in Medicine to honor outstanding commitment to improving healthcare worldwide. Until 2014, the award, then known as the Medical-Humanitarian Award, was presented biennially. Since 2016, it has been awarded annually, with a different thematic focus each year. This page features the award recipients from 2016 to 2019, along with the award-winning projects from 2010, 2012, and 2014.

Award Recipient: Dr. Martin Rohacek
Project: "Establishment and Organization of an Emergency Department at St. Francis Referral Hospital in Ifakara, Tanzania"
Organization: Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and the Emergency Department at St. Francis Referral Hospital in Ifakara, Tanzania
EKFS honored the project for its sustainable improvements to emergency medical care in Ifakara. In addition to establishing and organizing the emergency department, Dr. Martin Rohacek has trained medical staff in emergency medicine, ultrasound technology, and other areas.

Project: “Improvement of medical training and patient care in the case of non-communicable diseases: 10 years of assured access to diagnosis and therapy for hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolaemia and/or obesity in slum residents of Buenos Aires”
Organization: Apotheker ohne Grenzen Deutschland e.V. ("Pharmacists Without Borders Germany")
This award-winning project improves the medical and pharmaceutical care of people with chronic diseases in Villa Zagala, a slum area of Buenos Aires. The project focuses on ensuring reliable access to medications and diagnostics, as well as long-term care and prevention for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, metabolic disorders, and obesity.

Project: "Programme for the Improvement of Mother-Child Healthcare in Mugu, West Nepal"
Organization: PHASE Austria, Vienna, Austria

The program strengthens healthcare for mothers and children in remote regions of western Nepal. PHASE Austria sends medical staff to Nepal and provides regular supervision. The organization also improves equipment and the supply of medicinal products.

Project: "Training of paediatric specialists in Tanzania: Sustainable reduction of child mortality by qualified health personnel"

This award-winning project strengthens pediatric care in Tanzania by establishing a pediatric specialist training program. Qualified health personnel contribute to improving healthcare for children sustainably and reducing child mortality. EKFS honored Dr. Carsten Krüger and the German Society for Tropical Pediatrics and International Child Health in Tanzania for their many years of work.
