The award-winner has been performing exemplary work in Tanzania for many years with his German Society for Tropical Paediatrics and International Child Health e.V. (“GTP”).
Award recipient: German Society for Tropical Paediatrics and International Child Health (GTP) located in Ahlen
Project: Training of paediatric specialists in Tanzania: Sustainable reduction of child mortality by qualified health personnel
Project Coordinator: Dr Carsten Krüger, Chairman
In the meantime, although major successes in combatting child mortality in the case of children younger than 5 are to be reported, many children are continuing to die from preventable and/or successfully treatable diseases, especially in Africa. With 24 million children, Tanzania remains among the countries in Africa most severely affected. In 2005 there were merely 56 paediatricians in all of Tanzania for over 17 million children younger than 15. That’s not the situation today: Due to Dr Krüger and his project team, a paediatric training programme to become a specialised physician was able to be established in Tanzania in which meanwhile 4 to 6 paediatricians conclude their advanced training each year with a degree as Master of Medicine. A sustainable form of help for the country, because all of the 25 paediatricians who have been trained to date are still active in Tanzania.
