In the meantime, although major successes in combatting child mortality in the case of children younger than 5 are to be reported, many children are continuing to die from preventable and/or successfully treatable diseases, especially in Africa. With 24 million children, Tanzania remains among the countries in Africa most severely affected. In 2005 there were merely 56 paediatricians in all of Tanzania for over 17 million children younger than 15. That’s not the situation today: Due to Dr Krüger and his project team, a paediatric training programme to become a specialised physician was able to be established in Tanzania in which meanwhile 4 to 6 paediatricians conclude their advanced training each year with a degree as Master of Medicine. A sustainable form of help for the country, because all of the 25 paediatricians who have been trained to date are still active in Tanzania.

Award ceremony
An awards ceremony was held on 20 October 2016 at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Among those in attendance were:

• Dr Auma Obama, of the Sauti Kuu Foundation as laudatory speaker.
• Thomas Silberhorn, parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development as representative of the German government; Opening speech by Parliamentary State Secretary Thomas Silberhorn

Two Awards of Recognition
Although there was a clear decision for the main award, the jury was impressed by two other projects. Therefore EKFS decided to support the future work of the following two projects through awards of recognition, each endowed with €50,000.
