The EKFS has been awarded the prize in recognition of the association’s programme for improving mother-child health care in West Nepal. The prize, which is endowed with a sum of €100,000, was presented in Berlin at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in the presence of former Federal President Horst Köhler and the Chairman of the Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen [Association of German Foundations], Michael Göring.

PHASE delegates female medical staff in Nepal, accompanies them via regular supervision and improves both the equipment and the spectrum of medicinal products on offer – all bearing a distinct focus on the health of women and children. Even though the Himalayan region on the whole has made progress in this area, maternal and child mortality in the north-western part of the country continues to be very high.
The Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations in 2000 defined mother-child health as one of the key focus areas of international development work. Despite considerable efforts at an international level, however, the actual improvements achieved were inadequate, and this area received renewed emphasis in the new UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2015. In order to acknowledge and further support the commitment in this critical area, the Else Kröner Fresenius Preis für Medizinische Entwicklungszusammenarbeit is to be awarded this year for projects in the field of mother-child health.
