Many Haitian children still die of curable diseases because of an acute shortage of pediatricians and severe deficits of the country's health system. State hospitals are poorly stocked with medi-cal equipment and supplies and are understaffed. As a result, the care for the newborns, chil-dren and mothers is insufficient. Because of the precarious state of the health system, many Haitian doctors emigrate for the lack of career prospects. This aggravates the already existing shortage of physicians.

The goal of this project is to continue a three-year residency program that was initiated in 2013. It trains young Haitian doctors in pediatrics enhancing their career prospects in their own country. The implementing consortium consists of St. Damien pediatric hospital run by the local NGO Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs (NPFS) Haiti, Université de Notre Dame d'Haïti (UNDH) - one of the lead-ing medical faculties - and the private hospital Bernard Mevs/Medishare. Every year, six Haitian medical graduates participate in this three-year specialist pediatrics training. In this way, after six years of study and practical training, physicians receive a well-grounded qualification that enables them secure their livelihood. In addition to academic support by UNDH, the program enables demanding and practice-oriented training in pediatric disciplines such as neonatology, intensive care medicine, surgery, oncology, HIV and trauma treatment as well as rehabilitation.

As part of the successful pilot phase from 2013 to 2016, the three cooperating institutions devel-oped a curriculum for the residency program. It combines intensive mentoring by experienced medical specialists, theoretical and practical training phases and a close support for patient care. The program also allows the residents to participate in medical conferences and in information exchange with international medical specialists. Support in placing the young pediatricians in the labor market increase the prospects that the highly qualified pediatricians will stay in Haiti after the program. The project will cover the qualification of six pediatric specialists who will make an important contribution to improving the health care for newborns, children, adolescents and mothers in Haiti.
