Situation:
Tanzania has a neonatal mortality rate of 20 per 1000 live births (2021). Key reasons are the lack of necessary equipment and infrastructure at rural facilities and lack of skilled staff. At project start, only one hospital in Morogoro Region (population of 2.7 million, 49’000 births per year) provided basic newborn care. Evidence for the most cost-effective service package was missing.
Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) has supported this project conducted by the Dortmund District of Evangelical Churches in Germany and the Congolese partner district of churches in Bolenge since 2019. Roughly six tours by boat are carried out per year. In a few days the festively decorated ambulance boat will be setting off on its 75th tour. Among the equipment stowed in the hold are two inflatable tents as combinable mobile treatment and surgical unit, an operating table and surgical lighting fixtures, as well as as an ultrasound imaging device and an ECG unit.
The award acknowledges outstanding projects which contribute toward improving medical healthcare in developing countries along with those persons from organizations who are responsible for the projects.

Afghanistan belongs to the poorest countries of the world. Since 1978 the country faces war. After pull-out of the USA in August 2021 the capital Kabul lost over 2 mln Inhabitants (currently approx.. 5 mln.) The whole population will be about 42 mln and 43% are under age of 15 years. The Irene Salimi Children Hospital has 50 beds and 2 Operation Theatres. As specialized Training Institute for child orthopedics and child surgery the ISH operates children from all provinces of Afghanistan.
Objectives:
Close collaboration has existed for years between the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg (JMU) and the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS) in Mwanza, Tanzania. The Else Kröner Center Würzburg-Mwanza (EKC) was founded in the summer of 2020 with the support of Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung. This enabled the partnership between the universities and university hospitals at their two locations, as well as with DAHW, a German relief organization for leprosy and tuberculosis, and the medmissio – Institute for Global Health to be elevated to a new level.
Situation:
The state of healthcare for children and mothers in Guatemala is highly problematic, with only rudimentary health services and medical information available. Most of the poor, mainly indigenous people have hardly any knowledge of their human and medical rights. Infant and maternal mortality rates are extremely high, and malnutrition is also widespread, especially in rural areas.
Objectives:
Creating healthy and sustainable development opportunities for pregnant women and children up to the age of six.
Situation:
The healthcare system in Nepal suffers from extreme underfunding. Government efforts focus on basic care in the form of health posts. However, these are often lacking in rural areas. Dhulikhel Hospital and its 18 health posts provide medical care for people in a catchment area of 1.9 million inhabitants.

Nigeria accounts for a quarter of all malaria cases worldwide. In addition, around 2 million children and seven percent of women of childbearing age suffer from acute malnutrition. Treatment is inadequate, which leads to a high mortality rate. There is also a lack of education and knowledge about the consequences, prevention and the interaction of malaria and malnutrition.
