Whole-body Electromyostimulation for the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis (EMSOAT) $ in Overweight People - a Randomized Controlled Trial

Resistance exercise training has been shown to generate positive effects on pain and functionality in osteoarthritis of the knee. Unfortunately, only few people with osteoarthritic knee pain are motivated or even able to perform regular conventional resistance exercise. Whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) a time-efficient, joint-friendly and subjectively less strenuous intervention might be a feasible option to conventional resistance exercise.

OptoCilia - Targeting ciliary signaling in the development of polycystic kidney disease

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common hereditary disease worldwide. ADPKD belongs to disorders, which are commonly referred to as ciliopathies. Ciliopathies are due to defects in tiny structures – the primary cilia. Primary cilia are eyelash protrusion emanating from the cell surface that function as cellular antenna. Defects in this antenna function in the kidney cause cyst development. However, the molecular details how the antenna function is disturbed and why this leads to cyst development, is not well understood.

6 million euros in funding for nutritional medicine

The Else Kröner Fresenius Zentrum (EKFZ), a Center for Nutritional Medicine at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has combined modern nutrition sciences with advanced medical research for nearly 20 years. The success of this concept is demonstrated by trailblazing studies on such topics as nutrition during pregnancy, diseases of the digestive organs and brown adipose tissue. The Else Kröner Fresenius Foundation and TUM have now signed an agreement for an additional 6 million euros in funding over the coming five years.

Checking back: What has become of our formerly funded scientists?

Prof. Dr. Dr. Christine Engeland took on the capacity as Professor for Experimental Virology on the faculty for Virology and Microbiology at Witten/Herdecke University in 2020. Together with her project team she studies virus-host interactions and, on the basis of these findings, researches new therapeutical approaches – one focal point thereof is cancer immunotherapy.

Publication Prize 2022

All of the next-generation scientists funded by EKFS within the medical/scientific funding lines First and Second Application, Else Kröner Memorial Fellowships and Else Kröner Advancement Programmes were able to submit entries for the prize. Each of the prizes is endowed with EUR 10,000 for use at the prizewinner’s personal discretion.

The autotaxin-lysophosphatidic acid-axis as corticosteroid target in the pathophysiology of nephrotic syndrome

Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disease characterized by protein loss in the urine, water retention and changes in blood lipids. Steroids are used to treat this disease without knowing exactly how they work in the kidney. Lysophosphatidic acids are a class of fat molecules that circulate in the blood, and also bind as signaling molecules to receptors in the kidney. We think that in nephrotic syndrome the composition of the lysophosphatidic acids in the blood is changed and that steroids have a positive effect on these changes.
