Auditory Attention in Real-Life Settings in Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

The project investigates how adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) process sounds in everyday situations and how this is related to attention, distractibility, and sensory overload. Many affected individuals report that background noise, for example in offices, conversations, or public spaces, substantially interferes with their ability to concentrate. To date, however, such auditory processing alterations have predominantly been investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. Using EEG, the project will assess neurophysiological markers of auditory processing both in the laboratory and in ecologically valid environments, such as office and cafeteria settings. The focus will be on early sensory filtering processes and later attention-related brain responses. In addition, the project will examine whether treatment with methylphenidate improves these markers in adults with ADHD.The findings aim to contribute to a better understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying sensory openness, distractibility, and sensory overload in ADHD.
