The Center for Nutritional Medicine, funded by the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung, is a research institution with the goal of bringing nutritional expertise into clinical medicine and thereby strengthening the importance of nutritional medicine in treating lifestyle diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The EKFZ is spread across two faculties – Faculty of Medicine rechts der Isar and the Weihenstephan Science Center.
The professorships funded there in the fields of clinical (Prof. Dr. Hans Hauner), molecular (Prof. Dr. Martin Klingenspor), and pediatric (Prof. Dr. Heiko Witt) nutritional medicine have been strengthened since October 2020 by a collaboration with Else Kröner Senior Professor Prof. Dr. Berthold Koletzko, pediatrician at Dr. Hauner's Children's Hospital at LMU.
The objectives of the EKFZ:
- Basic research and clinical research on key issues in nutritional medicine
- Modern nutritional medicine concepts for the prevention and treatment of nutrition-related diseases of affluence such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cancer
- Qualified teaching for students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs
- Further training for doctors and nutritionists in the field of nutritional medicine
- Sociopolitical engagement in the area of public health.
