Request for support of cancer patients in Lviv /Ukraine
Situation:
Healthcare in regions of Ukraine near the front line has been reduced to the bare minimum. Patients with serious illnesses seek treatment at the opposite end of the country. The municipal hospitals of the First Medical Union in Lviv (western Ukraine) are among the top facilities which cancer patients turn to. For instance, the number of patients undergoing chemotherapy has nearly tripled in two years, while the number of patients with blood cancers has more than doubled. However, the war has disrupted supply chains, and cancer medications needed for treatment are in short supply.
Objectives:
The cancer hospitals of the First Medical Union require sufficient medication to treat ca. 1,000 patients over the next 12 months. 15 essential drugs for treating blood and bone marrow cancers, performing stem cell transplants, treating breast cancer and brain tumors, and controlling infections are needed.

The drugs will, in many cases, ensure early treatment and thereby minimise the need for more expensive later stage-treatment options.
The delivery of the humanitarian aid is taking place in two stages: a pallet containing a medication for life-saving stem cell transplants is reaching blood cancer specialists in Lviv shortly after the launch of the appeal for donations. All remaining medications will be handed over in the autumn of 2026.
