Hope in Action

Situation:

Due to the war, families with children suffering from cancer in Ukraine are concentrated in just a few hospitals across the country. Successful treatment of these children requires an immediate and uninterrupted supply of medicines and medical supplies. However, there is a severe shortage of these supplies in hospitals, and the families affected are also unable to afford their share of the treatment costs due to having fled or changed their place of residence. Because of these multiple pressures, parents need counselling services and logistical support.

Objectives:

Enabling safe, continuous and free access to life-saving treatments for children with cancer and war injuries in major hospitals in Lviv and Chernihiv to improve their survival rates and quality of life.

Indicators:

At least 1,520 patients are provided with medicines, medical supplies, laboratory tests and services without exceeding the recommended maximum time between ordering and receipt by the patient.

At least 80% of the children’s carers state that the project’s services have significantly reduced their stress levels.

Measures:
  • Needs assessment
  • Procurement of essential medicines and medical supplies for the treatment of children with cancer in four partner hospitals
  • Timely and direct delivery of medical supplies and medicines to the hospital or to the affected family
  • Provision of support services and counselling for the children’s carers
Sustainability:

Children with cancer have a higher chance of survival thanks to uninterrupted, high-quality treatment.

By enabling partner hospitals to provide high-quality medical treatment, the likelihood of the relevant departments being cut by the National Health Service is reduced.

Special features:

In addition to children with cancer, at least 5,000 children with injuries, also caused by war (e.g. landmine injuries, burns) will also benefit from improved supplies of medical consumables. These children are treated in the relevant departments (traumatology, surgery, intensive care) of the target hospitals, where children with cancer are also treated.
