Qualified upgrading in gastroenterology in rural areas in Southern Tanzania
Situation:
The South of Tanzania is traditionally backward in comparison to the northern part. The infrastructure is in dire need of improvement, the available health budget is very low and the governmental hospitals are able to offer only basic health care. In this setting both of the two mission hospitals of the Benedictine Fathers ( each of which being referral hospital for the region) play a very dominant role. The do not only offer high quality medical care but are also attractive working places for young Tanzanian doctors.
Objectives:
The project aims at an improvement in medical education. Basically there are enough doctors (university graduates without specific upgrading) – but there is great need of qualified medical upgrading and specialisation. To obtain this, most of the young doctors had to go abroad so far (Europe / USA) – and very often they stayed there afterwards. Our aim is therefore to enable qualified upgrading within in the country and to make it sustainable.
Number of Specialists in internal medicine and gastroenterology , number of well-trained endoscopy staff, number of performed endoscopic procedures
- payment of fees for upgrading at a Tanzanian university for talented young doctors
- Hands-on workshops
- participation in payment of adequate endoscopy rooms and equipment
- indiviidual promotion of staff
A training tailored to the needs of the country within the country prevents the brain drain that has been common up to now. By long-term contracts with the obligation for young colleagues to work for a longer period in one of the hospitals we can build a stabile highly qualified team.
Previous projects of this type promoted either a specialised upgrading abroad or expatriate doctors, who should improve the situation on site.
