Improving Maternal and Child Health Care in Kasenengwa District, Zambia
Situation:
Maternal and child mortality rates in Zambia remain alarmingly high. In the rural Kasenengwa District, a lack of infrastructure, qualified personnel and essential medical equipment hinders access to healthcare. Poverty, long distances, low health awareness and widespread malnutrition further worsen the situation for women and children.
Objectives:
The project aims to reduce maternal and child mortality in Kasenengwa District by improving access to and quality of healthcare services for pregnant women, mothers and young children.
- Share of births attended by skilled personnel increases from 43% to 65%
- Percentage of pregnant women attending first antenatal visit in first trimester increases from 52% to 70%
- Share of children with moderate acute malnutrition receiving treatment increases from 0% to 30%
- Training for health workers in areas such as obstetric and neonatal emergencies, child illness management, growth monitoring, nutrition, disability inclusion and Baby-Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) to enhance quality of care
- Capacity building for community health volunteers on health education, nutrition, growth monitoring and early identification of malnutrition
- Strengthening of Safe Motherhood Action Groups (SMAGs) to raise awareness on maternal health, safe delivery and postnatal care at community level
- Engaging men and traditional leaders through awareness workshops to break gender-related barriers to accessing healthcare
- Procurement and distribution of essential medical supplies and equipment, including weighing scales, MUAC tapes, folic acid, ferrous sulphate, mebendazole, Fansidar and high-energy nutritional supplements
- Community outreach and awareness activities during biannual Child Health Weeks and regular home visits
- Provision of bicycles for volunteers to reach remote communities more effectively
- Training on disability-inclusive healthcare to reduce barriers and ensure participation of people with disabilities
- Monitoring and integration into the public health system in close collaboration with district and provincial health authorities
The project strengthens the Zambian health system by training local health workers and volunteers who will remain active beyond the project period. It builds on and enhances existing public structures such as SMAGs and rural health facilities. Equipment is handed over to the Ministry of Health, training content follows national standards, and monitoring data feeds into the national health information system.
The project combines capacity building at both community and facility levels with awareness-raising that addresses sociocultural barriers. Its innovative features include the systematic engagement of men and traditional leaders to promote gender equality and health-seeking behavior, as well as a strong focus on inclusive healthcare for persons with disabilities.
