Establishing Sustainable Laparoscopic Training for Gynecological Surgeons in Rural Ghana
Situation:
This project, supported by the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung, aims to establish sustainable training in minimally invasive gynecological surgery at Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, Ghana. The teaching hospital serves a catchment population of approximately two million people and has been designated as a national pilot center for gynecological laparoscopy training.
Objectives:
Over a three-year period, Ghanaian gynecologists, surgeons, and nursing staff will receive structured training in modern laparoscopic techniques. The program combines theoretical education, simulation-based skills training, supervised clinical practice, and selected advanced training opportunities in Germany based on internationally recognized standards.
The project actively promotes gender equity. One of the Ghanaian gynecologists participating in advanced laparoscopic training femal, strengthering femal leadership in surgery. Improved access to minimally invasive gynecological care directly benefits women in rural settings.
The project combines service, training, and research to create a reproducible, evidence-based model for laparoscopic capacity building in low-resource settings. It addresses prior reviewer feedback by embedding a scientific framework, clear research questions, and a multi-institutional network. Local continuation ensured through trained staff and cost-recovery for consumables. Academic link with Innsbruck and Kiel supports ongoing research and future fellowship development.
All research activities follow Ghana Health Service and German ethics standards. Patient consent ensured. No experimental interventions planned.
