Three million euros for GMP production of clinical trial material

Bad Homburg v.d. Höhe, June 20, 2023 – ForTra gGmbH für Forschungstransfer der Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (ForTra), a non-profit subsidiary of the foundation EKFS, supports the legally conformant production of new pharmaceutical drug candidates under GMP conditions for direct use in first-in-human clinical studies. ForTra announced three million euros to be awarded in its call for proposals in August 2022. Following extensive scientific review and appraisal, five projects were approved and will be funded as of now.

Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) is honoring Akiko Iwasaki’s groundbreaking contributions in the area of “Diseases of worldwide significance” and acknowledging her research work on immune responses to viral infections with the prize endowed with 2.5 million euros. The prize also furthers Professor Iwasaki’s plans for investigating post-acute infection syndromes such as long COVID and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). The festive award ceremony took place on June 5th, 2023 at the Palmengarten in Frankfurt, Germany.

First Alumni Day at Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung

This first Alumni Day at the foundation took place on June 6, 2023 at a guest house belonging to Frankfurt University. Yale Professor Akiko Iwasaki honored for research on long COVID with 2.5 million euros

Bad Homburg v.d. Höhe, June 6, 2023 – Yesterday immunobiologist Akiko Iwasaki from the Yale School of Medicine was awarded this year’s Else Kröner Fresenius Prize for Medical Research. One of the world’s most highly endowed distinctions for research in the field of medicine, the prize amounts to 2.5 million euros.

All of the next-generation scientists funded by EKFS within the medical/scientific funding lines First and Second Application, Else Kröner Memorial Fellowships and Else Kröner Advancement Programmes were able to submit entries for the prize. Each of the prizes is endowed with EUR 10,000 for use at the prizewinner’s personal discretion.

The biochemical dissection of TDP-43 proteinopathies

A typical feature of the brain in neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the deposition of the protein TDP-43. TDP-43 is deposited years before the onset of disease symptoms. However, so far the disease-typical marker TDP-43 cannot be measured in the blood or cerebrospinal fluid of patients, which often leads to a delay in diagnosing the disease and the development of disease-specific therapies.
