Cutting-edge research on RNA-based therapies: Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung announces Prize for Medical Research 2025

Bad Homburg v.d. Höhe, June 5, 2024 – Today the foundation Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung (EKFS) announced its call for proposals for the Else Kröner Fresenius Prize for Medical Research 2025. Endowed with 2.5 million euros, the prize will be awarded next year for outstanding achievements in the field of RNA-based therapies.

Extracorporeal Life Support in Infarct-Related Cardiogenic Shock (ECLS-SHOCK)

Cardiogenic shock is caused by a pump failure of the heart and in most cases caused by a heart attack. Currently, still 40-50% of these patients die. For more than ten years, cardiogenic shock has been treated with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which is called VA-ECMO or ECLS, to support the failing heart. In the large ECLS-SHOCK trial, in which a total of 420 patients with cardiogenic shock after myocardial infarction at 44 centers in Germany and Slovenia participated, VA-ECMO therapy in the intensive care unit was compared versus no VA-ECMO in the intensive care unit.

Genome Dynamics and Epigenomics

The Else Kröner graduate study program “Genome Dynamics and Epigenomics” promotes high-achieving medical students with an interest in biomedical research. The program supports them in their intention to accomplish a demanding doctoral thesis in experimental medicine parallel to their studies. This is made possible via networking events, course offers and fellowships for sabbatical semesters to carry out research.
