TICH - Talent and Innovation for Community Health

Situation:

In Mozambique, particularly in rural areas such as Sofala Province and Chibabava District, access to basic healthcare services is severely limited. High maternal, neonatal and under-five mortality rates, widespread malaria and diarrhoeal diseases, and chronic malnutrition represent major challenges. Long distances, weak infrastructure and shortages of qualified health personnel further restrict service delivery. Political instability and limited public resources negatively affect the continuity and quality of healthcare, especially for vulnerable populations.

Objectives:

The project aims to sustainably improve the quality and coverage of the community health system in Mozambique. Through practice-oriented training of community health workers and other health actors, and by establishing a Community Health Excellence Hub, the national Community Health Strategy is effectively supported and embedded within the formal health system.

Indicators:

At least 300 community health workers and other health actors receive practice-oriented training. The Community Health Excellence Hub is officially recognized as a training and demonstration centre. Proven approaches are systematically documented and transferred to other provinces. At the same time, the utilization of community health services increases, particularly among mothers, newborns and children.

Measures:

Development and implementation of a practice-oriented training module for community health workers and other health actors, establishment and operation of the Community Health Excellence Hub in Panja, delivery of regular training cycles, and technical support to other provinces. National exchange formats promote knowledge sharing and the dissemination of best practices in community health.

Sustainability:

Project sustainability is ensured through the institutional integration of the Community Health Excellence Hub into the public health system, the training of local trainers and active community involvement. Integration into national planning and budgeting structures supports the long-term continuation and scaling of activities.

Special features:

The project links formal and traditional health structures in line with national guidelines and strengthens collaboration at local level. The Community Health Excellence Hub functions as a model with strong replication potential and supports the nationwide development of the community health system.
