Else Kröner Fresenius Award for Development Cooperation in Medicine

The award acknowledges outstanding projects which contribute toward improving medical healthcare in developing countries along with those persons from organizations who are responsible for the projects. The award is endowed with 100,000 euros. This year the award honors projects on the topic of “Child Health”

Although the child mortality rate has declined worldwide over the last 30 years, to this day a child born in Africa south of the Sahara or in southern Asia still has a risk of dying in the course of the child’s first month of life that is ten times higher than for a child born in a country with a high level of income. Each year around five million children younger than five years old die due to a lack of health services, frequently from preventable or treatable causes. EKFS readily funds and supports a special program pertaining to the topic of “Child Health” toward the sustainable strengthening of medical healthcare for children in developing countries.

Proposals are encouraged which involve successful projects in OECD DAC-listed countries that are based on partnership. The projects ought to demonstrate how the survival rates and the health of children younger than five can be boosted by an improved qualification of health professionals and good clinical care. In order to achieve this, the links between the domestic environment, healthcare entities on the primary level and hospitals must have been strengthened and an effective continuum of care readily established.

Alongside the high level of quality and innovation on the part of the project, the particular achievement and character displayed by the proposed person responsible for the project is deemed as being of equal value for receiving the award. The project should be implemented by or together with local partners, strengthen the respective healthcare structures, and serve to set an example for projects in this sector.

Please note the information for proposal submission. The deadline for submission is April 1, 2024.

The award ceremony shall foreseeably be held in October 2024 in Berlin.
